Type 99 is the currently used self-propelled howitzer of the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Forces. Its chassis was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (a modification of Type 89 IFV chassis was used) and the gun including the turret was developed by Japan Steel Works. The design began in 1985 and the first prototype was ready by 1992, the final deployment to JGSDF took place in 1999 which gave the type designation to the 155mm SPH. The main gun is 52 calibers long which allows it to fire standard HE shells at a distance of at least 30km. Its armor is capable of protecting the crew from machine gun fire and artillery fire splinters. For self-protection, a 12.7-mm machine gun is fitted.
