JGSDF Type 89 IFV

In 1980 JGSDF issued a specification for a new Infantry Fighting Vehicle that would deliver the capabilities of Type 73 APC including the necessary firepower to support the deployed troops. By 1984 Mitsubishi delivered 4 prototypes that were tested until 1986. The design was approved and Type 89 officially entered service with JGSDF in 1989. Its turret is armed with a 35mm Oerlikon cannon (manufactured in Japan under license by Japan Steel Works) and a single Type 79 Jyu-MAT anti-tank missile on each side of the turret. It can carry a team of 7 that can fire from within the vehicle through ports facing to the sides and rear. Type 89 is expected to remain in service for 40 years and a total of 300 units was ordered from Mitsubishi.
