When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the U.S. Navy responded immediately by deploying a carrier task force to the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, where F-14 fighters were active in escorting attack aircraft in addition to their primary mission of air defense. However, Iraqi pilots, who had suffered severely at the hands of Iranian Air Force F-14s during the Iran-Iraq War, fled without engaging when they detected the radar signature of U.S. Navy F-14s. This prevented Tomcat pilots from scoring any aerial victories in the conflict. The decals are for a plane of the VF-32 “Swordsmen” and one of the VF-102 “Diamondbacks” that flew in the Gulf War, as well as one set for the VF-102 Tomcat that shot down a Libyan MiG-23 over the Gulf of Sidra in 1989.
