Based on the U.S. Air Force and Navy’s adversary training units, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) established its own similar unit, the “Air Tactics Development Wing,” in 1981 to improve fighter pilot skills. In 2016, the unit moved to Komatsu Air Base, was renamed the “Tactics Development Group,” and began rotating among various JASDF fighter and control units to conduct training. Since 1990, the F-15 has been the primary aircraft used by the unit, with each plane featuring unique camouflage patterns to clearly distinguish friend from foe in mock battles. These “Aggressor” aircraft have gained popularity among fans.
Aircraft [No. 904, Black/White] is a single-seat J model, assigned in May 2007. While following the dark gray and white color scheme of its predecessor, aircraft No. 906, it replaced gray with pure black. This aircraft had a shorter service period than others, removing these two colors in late August 2008 before leaving the unit shortly thereafter.
Aircraft [No. 095, Brown/Light Brown/Dark Green] is a two-seat DJ model. The camouflage, introduced in November 2023, features brown tones thought to be inspired by the Iranian Air Force and U.S. Navy Aggressor F-14A aircraft. The distinctive colors and high-contrast design make it easy to identify among the unit’s other aircraft.
