In 1972, during the latter part of the Vietnam War, the U.S. Air Force conducted large-scale air operations as part of the resumed “Operation Linebacker” bombing campaign. During this period, Navy pilots Captain Cunningham and Lieutenant Driscoll became the first U.S. Navy aces of the Vietnam War, shooting down a total of five enemy aircraft. The aircraft they flew when they achieved “ace” status by downing three aircraft in a single mission had the radio call sign “Showtime 100.”
